Hazardous Material

Paint and Liquids

Latex paint can be dried using cat litter, sand, or commercial hardener and disposed of in regular household trash once solidified. Oil-based paints, varnishes, and other hazardous liquids must be taken to specialized Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection sites, such as your local landfill or drop off sites.

Batteries

Most batteries are considered household hazardous waste (HHW) due to toxic heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium) and corrosive acids. Rechargeable (Li-ion, Ni-Cd) and lead-acid batteries must be taken to specialized recycling centers to prevent fires. Standard alkaline batteries can usually be trashed, but recycling is preferred.

Medical-waste

Medical waste must be separated into sharps (needles/lancets) and other biohazardous materials. Household sharps should be placed in rigid, sealed containers (like laundry detergent bottles) and disposed of in the trash, never recycling. Unwanted medications should be taken to local drop boxes, pharmacy take-back programs.
